Moturua Island Walks

Travel to Moturua Island with Dive Ops and explore the beautiful island steeped in history - it has 27 recorded archaeological sites and three main Pa sites.

Description:
The track skirts around the island and descends down to the four main bays on Moturua Island beaches that have sand and pebbles. There are a few steep cliffs and bluffs to be aware of.

Time & Distance:
The total distance of the track is 4.6km around the island and generally takes 2.5 hrs to walk. The total island mass is 136 ha.

Getting There and Back:
During the summer months Dive Ops run a daily shuttle leaving Paihia / Russell at 10am. Pick up from the Island is at approx 2:30pm, so there's plenty of time to take a picnic and stop at one of the many beaches on this beautiful island. Dive Ops has snorkelling gear available for hire so you can make the most of the spectacular underwater life.

You can also book an on demand water taxi with departure times to suit you and your group.
Price: $115.00 for up to four passengers one way, $25.00 per extra person

Historical: 
There are three main Pa sites with fantastic views from the western Pa site - Hikurangi Pa. British explorer Captain Cook traded food and supplies with the Maori people from here in 1769 and Marion Du Fresne, a French explorer, spent a few months here in 1772.

Plan, Prepare & Be Safe:
The Moturua Island track is mostly well formed, there are some steep sections and rough ground in places; it's suitable for persons with low to moderate fitness levels. The track is clearly signposted and steam and river crossings are bridged. Dive Ops recommends light tramping shoes or boots. Be sure to take plenty of fresh water and snacks. Please do not take your dog as they pose risks to wildlife.

Experience Urupukapuka Island with Dive Ops. Our daily water taxis (in the summer months) run a drop-off and pick-up service so you will have plenty of time to relax, explore and enjoy.

Description:
Urupukapuka Island is the largest of all the islands in the Bay of Islands. Many of the large bays and beaches provide great starting points to start your walk. The Dive Ops Water Taxi can drop you off at one of these beaches, or at the wharf in Otehei Bay. The many Pa sites and rolling hills, rough ridges and steep cliff faces provide great photo opportunities.

Time & Distance:
Walks range from 30 min strolls to a 5 hour walks - it's your choice!

Pick up from the Island is at approx 2:15pm, so there's plenty of time to take a picnic and stop at one of the many beaches on this beautiful island. Plan, Prepare & Be Safe:
Urupukapuka Island has a range of walks available, so there is something to suit every fitness level. Tracks are mostly well formed, clearly signposted and light tramping shoes are recommended, Take plenty of water as there is no drinking water on the island. Café facilities are available on the island at the Zane Grey Resort in Otehei Bay.

Camping:
There are three campsites on Urupukapuka Island:

  • Sunset Bay is the smallest with only 4 tent sites, the bay faces southwest
  • Cable Bay has approx 50 tent sites and the bay faces south
  • Urupukapuka Bay Campsite is the largest with approximately 70 sites. During the summer months it is very important to pre book with the Department of Conservation. Prices: $8.10 adult/night, $2.00 child/night (5 – 17 years).

The Dive Ops water taxi can pick you up from Paihia, Waitangi or Russell and drop you off at your desired campsite - then it's just a short walk to your beachfront campsite.
